DESCRIPTION:GivingTuesday is a special day of giving for people to give to organizations they care about—and we hope you’ll show your support for Bethlehem House of Bread so together we can make sure our neighbors get access to enough food. \nFor the last several months\, we’re not getting the volume of food we need from our usual partners to keep up with demand. And combined with rising food prices\, this has forced us to reduce the number of times in a month pantry guests can shop with us—a 50% reduction in food support for them. We hope this is temporary. \nThe money you donate on GivingTuesday will enable us to purchase priority food and other essentials to fill our shelves. DESCRIPTION:This free introductory workshop will prepare pantry guests for how to respond to natural disasters and other emergencies. Each participant will receive handouts and other resources. Workshop topics include:  \n\nAn overview of hazards in our region\nPriority items for an evacuation “Go Bag”\nHow to make a family emergency plan\nTips for creating a network of support\n\nA trained volunteer from the Tigard Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will facilitate the workshop. DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary of working alongside our community to ensure no one goes to bed hungry. Since the first bag of groceries were distributed to a few pantry guests in 2013\, our impact has grown exponentially to now serving over 800 families monthly. \nWe have a fun afternoon planned\, including BHOB Bingo\, live music\, and a hot sauce competition with special guests who will turn up the heat on our party. Plus\, September is Hunger Action month\, so it’s even more reason to celebrate. We couldn’t have reached this milestone without our community of supporters\, so please join us on Saturday\, September 9th for a free\, family-friendly afternoon with activities for kids and adults. \nOur brave hot sauce contestants will eat chips dipped in progressively hotter hot sauces while being asked questions about how best to address hunger in our community\, while sharing a little bit about themselves. Local hot sauces will be used in the competition. DESCRIPTION:While one in five of us will need significant assistance with the activities of daily living or long-term care for more than five years\, costing as much as $100\,000 per year\, about 50% of women ages 55 to 66 have no personal retirement savings. Aging Into Poverty spotlights the looming crisis for American women\, their families\, and communities. Author Kathy Sharp details the history and public policy decisions that have consigned so many senior women to spend the end of their lives on waiting lists for care and dependent on public assistance. \nAging Into Poverty is a compelling personal narrative drawing from the experience of a caregiver who scrambled to put supports in place as her mother\, a retired CPA\, outlived her savings as her deteriorating health needs required an escalating level of care. Sharp describes the options for senior care in the United States detailing the budget and eligibility requirements. The system is designed so that the dependent elderly must be impoverished in order to qualify for Medicaid which is the only source of public subsidy for long term care. \nBooks will be signed and sold for a discounted price of $10 for cash or check. Nearly two-thirds of women in the U.S. with a low income cannot afford menstrual products\, while about half sometimes must choose between buying food or these types of products. Lack of access to menstrual products can negatively affect a women’s mental health. Women who are unable to purchase what they need often miss school or work\, and can struggle to participate in daily activities.
